Parking
at the University Of Kentucky
Fellow University of Kentucky students we all enjoy
the same benefits, we also all must deal with the few problems on campus. I
personally think the single most frustrating thing that we all must deal with
is the parking issue. There just are simply not enough options for students as
far as parking. We all realize that we are obviously a part of a large
university, but that doesn't exclude the fact that something needs to be done
about the availability of parking.
According to http://gatton.uky.edu
– UK has approximately 30,000 students on a daily basis that are fighting for
about 19,500 parking spots. In this meaning that about 35 percent of students
on daily basis don’t have a legal parking spot at the university! That is the
obvious cause of why they are so many parking tickets/citations handed out. This
means that students that don’t receive a parking spot either have to take the
chance of getting their vehicle toed or having to walk approximately 2 or 3
miles to get to their point of destination.
So now the question comes up what is the best possible
way to come across this issue? The goal here in this case cannot really be to
increase the amount of parking spaces, but to decrease the occupancy of those
spaces. There are several ways to go at this problem. With multiple parking structures
on campus, the amount of money that it takes to construct them, and the traffic
problems and congestion's that they can because I think we can go ahead and rule
that option out. So what does that leave us with? Carpooling, bicycling, safe cats,
public transportation from the city, and just straight up walking.
UK and the city of Lexington in itself actually have
a lot of different ways of public transportation, they just aren't necessarily
enforced to the degree in which they should be. Lexington offers multiple different
forms of buses and not to mention taxis. UK has safe cats (security guards on a
golf cart that can take you anywhere you want to go on the campus). These options
are really always there for us they just don’t always come to mind. So with all
the ideas I have presented, and as we gather further information about the transportation
services in Lexington and at the university, let’s all work together to improve
the parking issue at UK as much as we can!
